School of Extended Educational Options (SEEO) – Policy Overview

The School of Extended Education Options (SEEO) provides an Independent Study Program designed to meet the unique learning needs of our students outside the traditional classroom setting. Independent Study offers high-quality, standard-aligned education that is substantially equivalent in academic rigor to in-person instruction.

 

Learning Opportunities Offered

Independent Study allows students to engage in tailored educational paths, including:

• Core Curriculum: Alternative, individualized education designed to cover grade-level core standards.
• Special Interest & Extension: Advanced assignments or specialized subjects not available in standard classes.
• Health & Safety: Tailored study for students whose health would be at risk with in-person instruction (as determined by a parent/guardian).
• Travel & Community Service: Continuing education during travel, volunteer community service, and leadership development activities.

 

Key Program Requirements

1. Master Written Agreement: Before starting, students, parents/guardians, and designated certified teachers must sign a written agreement outlining learning objectives, resources, assignment schedules, and support services. Parents may request an informational meeting prior to signing.
2. Student Eligibility: Available to students who reside in Los Angeles County or an immediately adjacent county. Students with exceptional needs (IEP) may participate if their IEP specifically provides for independent study.
3. Instructional Interaction & Live Contact:
• Transitional Kindergarten – Grade 3: Opportunities for daily synchronous instruction.
• Grades 4 – 8: Opportunities for daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction.
• Grades 9 – 12: Opportunities for at least weekly synchronous instruction.
4. Coursework & Graduation: High school students receive access to all graduation-required courses, including University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) approved A–G courses.

 

• Daily Tracking: Daily participation and attendance are logged for every school day.
• Assignment Timelines: Maximum assignment completion timelines are set by policy (up to 18 weeks per agreement term).
• Re-engagement Strategies: If a student misses more than 3 school days (or 60% of a school week) or fails to make satisfactory educational progress, SEEO will initiate tiered outreach, parent notifications, contact updates, and support plans to help the student succeed.
• Equal Access: Independent Study students have full access to all school services, resources, devices, connectivity, and academic support as all other enrolled SEEO students.
